A STORMY TRIP
NGAKUTA ARRIVES FROM UREYMOUTII
SEAMEN, INJURED
Fears for tho safety of the Blackball Company's steamer Ngakuta, which left Greyinouth on Wednesday nigh>3 for Wellington, were set at rest, on Saturday night, when tho vessel arrived at U. 30 o'clock after a very tempestuous voyage, which was not without serious incMent. The Jrip from Greyinouth to Wellington usually occup'cs only 2G hours, but the Ngakuta found it impossible to reach port -under 3 days 8J hours.
Tlio Ngakuta left Greynioutli 011 Wednesday night at 8.30, and immediately afterwards. encountered tremendous seas, which pitched over the ship as high as the funnel. For a day and a half she was hove to, a fierce gale raging the whole time. During tho height of thci storm a large meat safe on the starboard deck, just abaft the galley, was swept away and crashed into tho rail, against wh'ch it jammed the chief officer, llr. Pryde, and an able seaman named P. Sharpo. The latter's left leg was fractured, and Mr.- Pryde received a deep on the forehead, besides suffering injuries to his shoulders. A wireless message was dispatched \V> Wellington, asking that an ambulance and a doctor should meet tho ship on arrival. This was done, and Mr. Pryde and the seaman Sharpe lvero conveyed to the hospital on Saturday night. Sharpe was detained Vn the institution for treatment, but after receiving further attention Mr. Pryde was sent to his home.
From the time of leaving Greymouih until arrival at Wellington, Captain P. Dowell did not leave the Ngakuta's bridge.
