HOLD-UP OF THE MOKOIA FIREMEN CONVICTED OF STRIKING 'By TolcKrauh—Presa Aiiooiatton.' Auckland, August 27. A sequel to the trouble on tho ferry steamer Mokoia oil July 12-, when certain members of tho crew refused to sail if Sir George plifford was a pasooDger, was the prosecution of the men concerned. Tho oase was heard in the llagistrate'6 Court to-day, the Mokoia beitajj now in port hero. The department claimed a penalty of J!10 from each man who was charged wilto becoming a pftrty to a strike. Mr. Bailey, of Wellington, Outlined the of tho case, and evidence was givep. by tho master and the chief engineer of the Mokoia. The defoiico was that there was no evidence thai/ any of tho defendants were engaged to work on the. ship or did work on it as firemen. It was alleged that they had taken part in a striko, but no orders had been disobeyed. and tho Statute did noil say that a threat to striko constituted a strike. The Magistrate hold that a strike had taken place, and that ha must convict. Counsel for the defendants intimated that there would be an appeal. The case was iheii adjourned till to-mor-row, when the question of penalties will bo discussed.
