_Mr. E. W. Dalton, His Majority's Trade Commissioner, left yesterday for .Auckland. He expects to be away from Wellington for about a fortnight. Mrs. Dalton accompanies Mr. Dalton.
A Press Association cablegram from Sydney reports that Sir. Frederick T. Nicholson was taken ill when returning from a holiday trip to New Zealand mid died suddenly from heart failure jufit nftcr binding, lie was n prominent Transvaller, and was a member of the South African Parliament until recently, when jio resided. Previously he was private secretary to the late President Krnger and General Botha. He was prominently conyMtcd with Methodism and the Toiinct Men's Christian Association. He visited Australasia to recuperate after strenuous wa* w-ork.

The death occurred 011 Tuesday night of Mr. Alexander M'Fnrl.me, who before going to Palnwrston North, ten months ago, to take up his residence' in retirenient\ had lived in Pahiatua for thirty years. In that district the late Mr. MTarlnne' was very widely known owing to the many prominent .positions lis occupied in semi-public, life. Keenly interested in the dairying industry. Mr. M'Fnrlane was 011 the directorate of a number of fnctoHes and was a valuable member of the National Dairy Association, and one tinio chairman. He wan also a Wnirararia. representative on the Wellington Harbour Hoard. In many such institutions Mr. M'Fnrlane will be missed not only for his keen judgment and agricultural knowledge, but also fop his genial personality. Mr, M'Farhne 1 "lives a widow and three daughters, Mi«e« .T. and B. M'Farlane. (who .live with their mother in Palmersfon North), and Mrs. TV T. Home, of Ballance, and twi youtliful sons. , '
Mr. George Woods has been appointed superintendent of the Sailors' Institutei Lyttelton, a position resigned by Mr. S. Booth a few weeks ago. Mr. Woods, who spent over two vears nt the front, has latterly been acting us district missioner in the Wellington district, under the auspices of the. Presbyterian Church. Ho will commcnce his new duties 011 September I.—"Sun."
