* -.. MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. -. A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Cociety of Accountants was held on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr. TV. K Best, of Chrietchurch). the vicepresident. Mr. Walter Green (Duneftfh) presided. A number of matters dealing with tho classification of members were dealt with. A discussion took place on the Question of tho Society's Benevolent Fund, and it waß ultimately decided that the present system of inequitable, and the Executive' Committee was instructed to take 6teps to convene a general meeting of .tho members "with a view to rearranging the annual subscriptions, and allocating a certain portion to tho credit of the Benevolent Fund. It was decided 'to increase tho orant to the University Colleges at Auckland. Canterbury, and Otago to £100 each for a further period of one year, which amount carries a subsidy of £ for £ from the Government. With regard to the concessions granted to returned soldiers in connection with examinations, it was decided that all applications for exemption must.be lodged before March 31, 1921. It was resolved to recommond to the University of New Zealand that the new conditions governing the March supplementary examination bo brought into operation at tho examination to be held in March -next.; Thoso conditions make the March examination available only for those condidates who cat for all subjects to complete tho final at the procedin? November examination. • Candidates ar'o required to sit'only fn tho subjects in which they failed in tho November cx&mination except in the case where a candidate has presented himself in only two subjects, and failed in ono of them, he will then be required to present himself in March in both subjects. It was resolved to approach the Government with a view to amending the Companies Act by incorporating a claußa similar to that in the English Act providink that a person other than the retirinff auditor shall not be capablo of "appointment as auditor to a company at the annual general meetinsr nnlesß 14 days notice has been iriven to the company, which in turn must notify ihe shareholders and the retirine auditor not less than seven days before the meoting. The English Act also provides a penalty if a balance-sheet is circulated without mi auditor's report attached thereto, and tho council is of opinion that this clauso should also bo incorporated in tho New Zealand Act. Mr Walter Green, of Dunedin, was elected president for tho eneuing year, and Mr. G. W. Hutchison (Auckland), vicepresident.
