PUKEKAWA TRAGEDY

SHOT FIRED AT CLOSE QUARTERS. By Teleeraoh-Press Association. Auckland, August 28. The home of Mr. Sydney • Eyre, who was shot dead when asleep on Tuesday night, is in cultivated paddocks, which were recently ploughed. There is no sign of a footprint on this_ or on the space. between it and the window from which the shot was fired. There was outside of the window a small truck on wheels, standing on which a man oi medium height could rest a gun barrel on the window ledge. The evidence indicates that the shot was fired at closo quarters, probably from a double-bar-relled 6hot gun. Thero were one or two guns in the house, but, these showed nu evidence of having been recently discharged. The murderer evidently took •iH'ny with him the, weapon with which the'crime was committal. Later. No developments of importance took placo to-day. in connection with the murder, and no arrest has yet been made, The police are scouring the district, but have few. clues to worit upon. The inquest was opened to-day, when Mrs. Eyre told how she was awakened to make the tragic discovery that her husband had been murdered. Evidence has been found that two-shots were fired, and it is presumed that TTTc murderer fired both barrels of his shotgun.
