COURT OF ARBITRATION

WAIRAEAPA. OABPENTEHS' .AWAED. The Arbitration Court has filed with the deputy-registrar at Wellington a new award for the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners (Wairarapa). The award provides for eight hours' work on flvo days of tho week, and four hours' work on Saturdays. The minimum wage for journeymen carpenters and joiners and for joiners' machinists is to be 2b. an hour, with a bonus of 3d. an hour. Extra rates for special kinds of work are provided. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a quarter for the first two hours; tinio and a half there- ■ after up to 10 p.m.; and double time:,between 10 p.m. and the ordinary time for commencing work next morning, when the work Is performed continuously. Workers required to ( begin work between 6 a.m. and the ordinary time for beginning work are to be pafd at tho rate of time and a quarter for such.time. Double time shall be paid for work done on Stfnday, New Year's Day, Good' Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day,' Christmas Day, or Boxing Day. The shortest clause in the award says •.—"Piecework is prohibited. Work shall not be Bubiet. (Labour only;)" . The minimum wages to bo paid apprentices are;— For tho first year, 165., a week; • for tho second, £1; for tho third, £1 10s.; ' for the fourth, £1 155.; for the fifth, £2 -10s.; with a bonus of Id. an hour in each' case. Partial exemption from : the provi- . sions of the award is granted to the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral As- . sociation, to tho Maßterton Agricultural 1 and Pastoral Association, and to freezing companies. A new award for tho Wellington District Furniture Trade (Workers' Union (upholsteresses' section) has been filed. Some of the provisions of the award were agreed on bofore tho Conciliation Council. The remainder have been settled by tho • Court on the lines of tho agreement recently arrived at in Auckland and also ' embodied in the Ghristchurch award.
