RAILWAY RATES
THE INCREASED CHARGES TO DATE FROM THURSDAY NEXT The new railway rat.es and fare* are to come into operation on Thursday of this'week. The sohedules havo been prepared and are now being distributed to railway officers throughout New Zea> land. Hhe details were not availablo for publication; last night. They are likely to be announced- to-day. . It is understood that there is a now schedule for holiday excursion tickets, suburban tickets, 12-trip ordinary and workers' tickets. Bates for other classes of tickets are being inorensed by 25 por cent., as compared with the 1915 rates. Fresh fruit, fresh fish, fresh milk, bread, flour, meat, tea and sugar are to be charged at the present rates. The increase over the 1014 rates fa other classes are roughly,'as follow:— ' 'Linage, cycles, horses, vehicles, etc, 33 per cent. • . ' Wheat, 20 per cent. Timber, one-seventh. Goods, live stock, haulage, storage, demurrage, 40 per cent. These increases absorb the increases made by the Railway Department in 1915 <vnu 191 T. The amount of the previous increases was from 17 to 21 per cent., and these advances have to be deducted from the present incroases in crdtr to arrive at the net addition to the rates. Maliy minor adjustments have been wade.
Corresponding increases have beon modem the rates on the Lake Wakatipu steamers. j
