THE NAIRANA. The Huddart-Parker Company's new itoamer Nairana, which lvas built in 1917 by Messrs. Denny Bros., at Dumbarton, is 326 ft. sin. in length, 45ft. 6ln. wide, and has a depth of 23ft. 6in., with a net tonnage of 1460. The vessel, on being put Into commission, was taken over by the Imperial Government and converted into an aeroplane carrier, all lier deckhouses and the mainmast being removed, and the deck canvassed in for the housing of the bombing machines, which were used on tho north coast cf Russia. The Nairuna is to run between Melbourne and Lannceston, and Captain G. B. Bates, master of tho Westralia, is to bring the tcsacl to Australia, and will leave Melbourno on September 16 for London. MINE SWEEPER VERONICA. The mine sweeper Veronica, flylug tho fthite Ensign, turned up unexpectedly at Sydney on, tho evening of AugUßt 2. She came from England via Torres Strait, and called at Sydney for ttorcs on her way to Now Zealand. Tho Veronica has been presented to tho New Zealand Government, and will in dun course form a Unit of the Dominion Navy. Sho is to aot as a training B hip. Tho Veronica ib similar in design to tho mine sweepers presented to Australia. Captain Gilling, late of the steamer Port Victor, has beeu appointed to the command of the Commonwealth and Dominion new liner Port Kombla, which was launched last March.. Captain Beck, who is well-known on the Commonwealth and Dominion steamerß, is now in charge of the Port Curtis, due hero to-morrow from Auckland. Mr. D. M'Murran haß joined tho Ngahero as chief engineer, in place of Mr. Murray, who has come ashore. The liner Matatua is due on Saturday from Auckland. After discharge of .part cargo here, she is to proceed to Lyttelton and Port Ohalmerß. The departure of the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Rimutaka for Auckland has been delayed until daybreak on Baturday. Tho Ruahine left Wellington at 7 o'clock yesterday morning for Gisborne to continue her Homeward loading. She will return to Wellington in time to sail for Southampton and London, via Panama, on August 28. Tho barqucß Rona and Ka-upo are due from Newcastle any time ( now with coal. The Rona has 1030 tons, while tho Raupo Is bringing 1080 tons.
