ALL BLACKS DEFEAT WELLINGTON
HOME SIDE BADLY BEATEN
To the tunc of 38 points to 3, Weiliugton were souudiy trounced by the Ail Mack team, at the Athletic Park ycster v day afternoon. It was not expected that Wellingt6n would will, but lew peoplo thought that tho margin of the All " lllaoko' victory would be so great. The match wae witnessed by between 9000 and 10,000 people, and among the spectator? were iho Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Jlassey), the Hon. 0. J. Parr, Hon. J. (i. Uoatcs, Hon. Dr. Pomare, Mr. T. M. Wilford (Actrng-LiKider of the Opposition), the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke;, and several members of Parliament, Beautiful weather prevailed lor the match, but tho ground was »n a very bad state, not having recovered from the severe gruelling it received on Saturday. Along the eastern line the mud wae thick and plentiful, and pools of water were scattered here ana there about the Held. Prom a spectacular point of view the match was most 'disappointing and one-siaed. The Wellington team were outclassed altogether as a combination, and they did pot cross the All Blacks' lino once, their only score coming from a penalty goal kicked* by'lt. Mich oils very, early in tho lirst spell. On neither side was the tackling brljliant. hut in the handling of the ball the' Ail Blacks were manifestly superior to Weliingt'on. and occasional bursts of passing vihictl they were able to put on were well worth witnessing. The All Blac'.B' fitie pack of forwards held the balance In their favour, and it was on less than half-a-ifozen occasions that Wellington were able- to penetrate the All Blacks' territory. The team's were as follow :— Wellington (green and black).—Pull-back, Malin; three-quarters, Aitken, E.- Byau, Barker; five-eighths, Corner, MV. Nicholls; half, 11. E. Nicholls: forwards, Fitzgerald (wing), S. Shearer, Calcinai, Wilson, Price, Harkncss, Hughes, 'and Stanucn. All Blacks.—Pull-back, O'Brien; threequarters, Storey, Baird, Algar; five-eighths, IJadcley.-J. Tilyard; half, E, Roberts; -forwards, Donald (wing), Bellis, J. Shearer, West, Moffitt, Jacobs, Duncan, Brown, Tho All Blacks kicked oil with the sun in their eycß, and after one or two returns they Bet up a rush which terminated in Brown touching down. Hobertß's kick failed. • Wellington wore kept on the defensive, but Malin managed to save his side on one or two occasions. At last the Wellington vanguard wa6 able to open up the play, and the v Greens invaded the All Black twenty-five, but the tables wcro turned on them, and a great race for the ball ensued between Bellis and Malin. Tlib leather was kicked out of the reach of Bellis, however, and he could not score. Wellington next- swarmed into the Ail Blacks--twenty-five, where the latter were penalised owing to Tilyard hanging on to the Ball. M. Nicholls had a 6'hot and kicked, a fine goal. All Blacks, 5; Wellington, 3. Soon after this Storey scored a. brilliant try for the All -Blacks. Play was, in progress in the Wellington twcnty.-tlve, and Storey, taking the ball on the full, made a short dash to the line, beating all opposition. Baird took the kick, but had no luck. All Blacks, 6; Wellington, 3. A dribbling rush in front of the Wellington goal was started by Roberts, and the ball was secured by Bellis, who scored close to the posts. Baird failed to goal. All Blacks, 9; Wellington, 3. The AH Blacks had the best of the play which followed,, and just before half-time Baird kicked a penalty goal, making the Ecorc: AH Blacks, 12; Wellington, 3. Wellington opened the second spell with a loose rush to the All Blacks' line, but Bellis broke away to half-way, and subsequently Wellington had to force, tho escape being a very narrow one, as Jacobs fell on top of Malin. From the ruck in front of the Wellington goal, O'Brien secured, and a passing bout followed. O'Brien sent the ball on to-Roberts, who transferred to' Jacobs. The latter handed it to Itoberts, who vctransfcrred to Jacobs, and the latter touched down. Bai-rd took the kick, but the ball 6truck one of the uprights. All Blacks, 15; Wellington, 3. Two Wellington rushes were tho next incidente of note, after which tho play became wholly one-sided. The All Blacks remained on tho offensive until tho olobc of the game, further tries being scored by Jacobs, Storey (2), J. Shearer, Donald, Badeley, and. O'Brien. Jacobs converted the try scored by Shearer. The final scoro was: All Blacks, 38; Wellington, 3, Mr. It. T. Bailey, was referee.
THE END OP THE TOUR. After yesterday's match both teams assembled at Barrett's Hotel. Complimentary speeches were made by Messrs. T. It. Jones (manager), J. Tilyard (captain), l». W. Slade (chairman N.Z.R.U.), A. J. Oritflths (one of the selectors), W. F. Hormg (chairman W.H.U.). and C. 'Brown. The southern and West Coast men left by the Wahiuo last evening, and the Auckland members are to go- north to-day. INTERPROYINcIaT MATCHES MANAWATU DEFEAT TARANAKI. By Telegraph—l'roßs' Association. Palmcrston North, August 18. Tlio Manawatu-Taranaki match was played here to-day In fine weather. There wan an attendance of 800. The game was oi i» poor description, and play waß chietiy confined to the forward divisions, in which Mauawatu held superiority. The hack play of both sides was disappointing, ior Mauawatu tries were scored by Itiggs and Munro. A penalty goal was kicked by Swainson, who also converted a try. For Taranaki Roberts succeeded in. gaming two penaltv goals. The match ended:Mauawatu, 11; Taranaki, 6. SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEAT SOUTH ISLANDERS. By Telegraph-Press Association. Hamilton August 19. Tho South Auckland Kugby representatives defeated the South Island country team by 9 points to nil. It was an interesting game, which tho better team won.
