Senior-Sergeant Bales,. of Napier, has been transferred by fflio Police Department to Auckland, where he will replace hcnior-Sergeant Macnamara. Sergeant O'Halloran, of Dannevirke, has been promoted to be senior-sergeant, and will be stationed at Napier. Sergeant P. Harvey, of Oiiahuhu, will transfer to Dannevirke.

The death is announced of Mr. Joseph Wareham. sen., who died at Lyttellon on Saturday morning. The deceased lived for very many years at Brighton and Charleston, on the west coast of the South) Island, at which places ho was connected with the loading and unloading of shipping trading between Australia and the wcst« coast. Mr. Wareham afterwards 'settled in Dunedin, from tlieneo ho removed to Wellington, where he became "the proprietor of Barrett's Hotel. He was afterwards connected with the proprietorship of hotels at Feilding and Stratford. Thie late Mr. Wareham left fivo sons and three daughters. His wife predeceased him thrcs years ago. The funeral will tako place to-day, moving from St. Mary of the Angels', Boulcott Street, leaving the church at 9 a.m. for tho Karori Cemetery. The late Mr. Wareham was in receipt of a pension from tho United States Government as a veteran of the Civil War, buying served in the United States Navy during tho war. lie saw service in the principal naval engagements between the Federal and Confederate navies. Mr. Wareham was born at Boston, U.S.A.

Mr. A. D. Ford, Mayor of Ricearton, who camo to Wellington to give evidence before the Local Bills Committee in connection with the Christchurch Drainage Board's Bill, now before the House, returned to Lyttelton on Saturday.
