RUMOURED FORTIFICATION BY ■ JAPAN. DENIED. Sydney, August 13. The Acting-Consul-General for Japan gives through the -Press an indignant official denial'of (lie rumours that Japan is fortifying islands in the Pacific south of-the- Equator. He says the rumour is ridiculous, and'lie suggests that it reDrcrents the manufacture of groundless prejudices against Japan for the purpose of making trouble between Japan and Britain or Japan and Australia by interested parties.—Press Assn.
