DAIRY PRODUCE

CO-OPERATIVE MARKETING SCHEME.

Messrs. J. S. Grieve and T, A. Buckingham (directors), and G. A." Lamb (secretary) of tho South Island Dairy Association, recently visited a number of Western District dairy factories in tin, interests of tho Co-operative Marketing Company, and met with most gratifying success (says the Otautau ".Standard"), Prior to visiting the Western District, a portion of the Eastern District had been covered, Mr. Middleton (chairman of the South Island Dairy Association; accompanying Mr. Lamb in that district. It is now manifest that at least onehalf of Southland's cheese output for 1920-21 will 'be exported through the new channel, and-, tluis n very earnest effort made to straighten the course from the producer to tne consumer. Earlior. in July good offers were made by tho New Zealand representatives of London houses for a limited number of outputs, and of the Western factories; Otautau, Fairfax, and I'ahia sold at Is. 2Jd. on trucks at their respective railway sidings. Tho Winton group of factories sold also, and several Eastern factories as well. Tho impression is that the sales that hnvo taken place will tend to stabilise tho price cn the Homo market. Meantime, all offers are withdrawn. Practically the whole of tho Southland'factories visited by the. South Island Dairy Association representatives have agreed to take shaves in the new Marketing Company on .tlio basis laid down by the promoters, viz., one share for every thousand pounds of buttor-fnt put through the factory. A 9 far as Southland is concerned, the successful flotation'of the company is assured, and if Otago and Canterbury respond as well, the new company will handle half the incoming season's cheese output of the South Island, and will enrol as members more than 75 per cent, of the factories whether such factories have sold or not. Reports from the North Island show that considerable progress is being-made tli/sre too, and up to last week 'over 10,000 tons of produce had been secured for disposal' through the new organisation. The percentage of success was not so marked as in the south, but the aggregate quantity both of the produce and shares is very much greater, as the North Island exports about four to one of the South Island in cliepso and butter.-"Otago Daily. Times."
