ACCOMMODATION FOR SEAMEN

Sir—l have been told oil different 00. casions that Wellington as a largo sc-n-. port is far behind other ports in providing suitable board and~ 'accommodation for the men of our naval and merchant' service. To any close observer, there is a' great deal of truth in the statement, and it is quite evident there is a need,' and the need is going to grow as the shipping increases. We are hoping shortly to liavo in Now Zealand waters the JI.M.S. Chatham, having a fairly large complement of seamen 011 board. What home comforts can wo offer these men when on shore leave, not to mention the' many young and older men of our merchant service who pay off from oversea: and intercolonial vessels, and who areobliged through Laving 110 other choice to seel: some kind of shelter, and too often 0110 hears the sad talo of their be-' ing fleeced of all their money. Now, Sir, what is urgently wanted 111 Welling-' ton is a hostel, somowhat on the eamo linos as the Soldiers' Hostel, but entirely for tho men of our naval and merchant service, where they could find a place providing the necessary home comiorts. Dip sailor does not want charity, and I believe is willing to pay for the comfort tho people of Wellington can give him. It is needless to mention tho debt of gratitude the peoplo of New Zealand, as' well as other parts of tho British Em-' piro, owe to our lads of the naval and merchant service. The great sacriflco inado and hardships endured during tho years of thoGreatWnraroan obligation which should not bo lost sight of. Surely Were are many large-hearted people in New Zealand who would willingly helpany scheme to provide in Wellington for our sailor lads a suitable home, providing tho comforts necessary to make their slay in Wellington a pleasure, instead of a regret.—l am, etc.. .. INTERESTED.
