SOUTHERN MARKET

By Telegraph—Press Association, Christchurch, August 6. The depression existing in'the oats and potatoes market has confined business to very narrow channels. Oats are a shade easier, and occasional 6alcs have taken place at 51s. Id. f.0.b., and it is reported in one or two eases at Id. lower. Merchants aro not disposed to accept tho latter prices as an index, however, although doubtless until weak holders are eradicated, this figure will yet be tho basis of some business. The depression is not so pronounced in Otago and Southland, where values a shade brighter than these prevailing locally are ruling in view of the fact that up to June 20 over two million bushels were thrashed in tho southern provinces. The firmness of the market there indicates confidence in the future. Chaff has eased in sympathy .with oats. Ono explanation of tho plenteousness of wits is that chaff is weighing much better this season. For feed potatoes the market is dead in the meantime. Onions are in request for good keeping 6orts.
