RECKLESS MOTORISTS

LEGISLATIVE CHECK SUGGESTED, i _

By TeleeraDh—Praia Aisociation' r Christchurch, August 5. At a meeting of tho South Island Motor Union to-night, the secretary reported that he had forwarded a letter to all Canterbury members of Parliament stating that owing to the frequency of serious motor accidents in the Dominion, the executive of the union con sidered that legislation should immediately bo passed to check careless and reckless driving. Experience had shown that tho mere fining of an offender did not prove a sufficient, deterrent, and the union had made representations to tho Government that it immediately introduce a Bill to Parliament dealing with tho licensing of all drivers of motor vehicles, such license to be granted/and be renewable by the Police Department, at a nominal fee and subject to cancel' lation, suspension, or endorsement _by u, Magistrate. In regard to numbering motor-cars, the present system was very defective, in that there was no check on tho numbering and registration of core which were sold and were taken to n district other than that in which they were registered.
