REPORT ON I.W.W. CASES
-CRITICISM REPLIED TO. Sydney, August 2. Mr. Storey, Premier of New South Wales, replying to criticism of Mr. Justice* Ewiug's Report on the I.W.W. coks, explained that the Government had simply adhered to its pre-olection promiso to appoint a commission. He ridiculed the suggestion that tho Government's notion was n violation of the principlo of trial by jury, as tho Australian Courts wero every day hearing appeals against the derisions of juries, without boing accused of reflecting on the Lower Court. Mr. Justice Ewing's fitness was testified to by tho Federal Government appointing 'him to inquire into the Darwin administration.
Senator Pearco disclaimed knowledge of the rumour that tho Commonwealth proposed to dopomt the prisoners when they wwe released. New aspeots are now developing. It is askod whether tho Government vill release all the prisoners and whether those who are deemed innocent will receive compensation. Neither is considered likely, bat agitation for both questions is oontdunplatodr-rPrcE!} Aba.
