NEW SERGEANT-AT-ARMS
-4 MAJOR BROWNE APPOINTED. Major Browne, 0.8. E., lias been appointed Sergcani-at-Arms in the House of Representatives. Major Browne baa been a soldier in the British Army for the whole of his adult life, if service in New Zealand is included as British service. He began, his career in tho Array with cavalry regiments, and he has also served abroad wijii the Cape Mounted Rifles, with the Punjab Light Horse, and last of all with! the New Zealand Staff Corps. He served in the campaigns in South Africa from 1877 to 1881, in East India from 1881 to 1900 (including a campaign on tho North Indian" frontier), and he left New Zealand for the Boar War in KXKhvith the 7th New Zealand Mounted Rifles, as staff officer and instructor. He volunteered on four separate occasions for service in the Great War, but his services were not accepted, and for his service here in New Zealand he was awarded the O-B.E.
Major Browne has 'been on thto retired list for somo timp, having passed the age of service with the Staff Corps. Ha is, however, still a vigorous, strong man, and he has the soldierly bearing which no man who has spent upwards of twenty years in the British Army ever loses.
