POLICE PEOBEOOTIONS. Mr. J. S. .Evans, 8.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. For drunkenness Elizabeth Brady and Daniel Devlin were i-ach fined BOs. • Rodney P. Clarke'was oharged that on May 24, at Dunedin, lie did steal on overcoat value £2 10a., tho property of E. W. Olimie. He was remanded to appear in Dunedin. The accused aaked for ball, but Ohief-Detectlvo Ward objected, pointing out that the accused was before tho Magistrate in Dunedin on this charge, an<i was convlotcd and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, provided he sailed- for England. A passago was booked for him. and a benevolent old gentleman brought him to Wellington, but ' ■ ho cave him the silo. Bail was refuted. ,uiaa Montgomery -pleaded guilty that between January 1 and May 18, 1920, he obtained 9s. 2d. from various persons by falsely representing that tho amounts collected, by him were for cartago of goods from the Thorndon and Lambton Hallway Station!. The Chief Detective said that when tho accused was questioned by tho police ho gave them the truth, and immediately made good tho amount. He was employed by a firm of carriers, who Were willing to re-employ him. The Magistrate said the offence was a deliberate one. Accused was in-a position of trust, and he collected these odd amounts in a orlmlnal way. Montgomery was fined £5, and was given two monthß • In which to. pay the amount. „ John O'Donoghue, a fireman, wai charged-with stealing two glawes of tho value of 3s. from the Caledonian Hotel. Mr. H. P. O'Leary appeared for the ao cused, who pleaded not guilty. According to the evidence the licensee of the Caledonian Hotel, who found ho was losing quite w number of glasses from hU bar engaged a man to watch the bars and see if he could detect anyone taking the glasses. The accused was seen by the amateur detective to put two glasses in his pocket. The licensee was informed; and be called O'Donoghue Into tho din-in"-room, and gave him over to the police. While waiting for the ipoltceman the accused (produced two glasses from Mi pocket, and smashed .them on tho flOor O'Donoghue was convicted, and fmea £5, with costs. Joseph B. Moore was convicted of assaulting a carrier named William a. rimitli, and was was fined £3, and costs *Walter Middlcton, barman of tho Cambridge Hotel, for whom Mr. M. Myers ap peared, was cliareed ; with serving a drunken man with liquor. The evidence showed that although the man had had some liquor, ho was not lntoxlcated-at all events, he was not in a condition to warrant his arrest for drunkenness. On the tacts, the Magistrate dismissed the Information.
