700' BRICKS A DAY INSTEAD 0# ! 360. ', "Is it correct that bricklayers hate left work on'"a housing .'scheme at Hayes, Middlesex, as a protest against the number of bricks laid by toino men on the job?" asked Viscount Curzon :in. the •House of Commons recently. He also asked " whether they had previously threatened to leave as a protest against the erection of any concrete cottages on tho spot. Dr; Addison said he had been informed 'that'some nicn demanded' tho dismissal of a foreman, •and that when pressed for an explanation tbe only substantial reason given was that this particular'foreman's section laid a greater number of bricks. The firm refused_ to dismiss the foreman, and the protesting bricklayers left the job. Ho understood that the men of this foreman's section laid 700 bricks a day compared with 360 bricks (laid by other, sections, and there i was no allegation- that the men were being unduly pressed. The bricklayers had previously threatened to withdraw unless work on concrc-to cottages was stopped, but they abandoned this position. The headquarters of tba had not sanctioned tho action'of the men.
