« ; THE WELLINGTON CLUB. Good progress was mado in the Weilington Chess Club's championship tourney last week. A. W. Gyles won from G. P. Anderson, and also from M'N&ir, Faiilknor won from foiling; Leo won from Fouhy, and W. E. Mason won from G. P. Anderson. The gomes Barnes v. Lee and S. Gyles v. Purchas were drawn, Tho fixture Purchas v. G. E. Mason is incomplete, having been adjourned in a very wen state. Mr. A. W. Gyles is now leading, having played four games and won them all. Messrs. W. E. Mason, Barnes, S. Gyles, and W. Mackay arc each half a point short of the possible. '
Messrs. Barnes, Faulknor, Jessup, Dornbusch, Wring, and Rov. Braddock scored further wins last week in tho "Petherick" tourney, whilo a very long gamo between S. Gyles and E. S. Tnvlor ended in a draw by perpetual check. Tho besti tallies in this tourney are now as follow:—Rev. .Braddock, 5 wins 2 losses; H. Jessup, 4!—1; Barnes, 4f-H; W. C. White. 4-3;" Wring, 4-3; Gyles, senr.. 4—3: E. S. Taylor, 31-11; and Fnulknor, 3-2.
Tho ladder match for rung 5 botween u. 1,. James (defender) and A. W. Gy'.es (challenger) ended in favour of the latter by two games to one. Gyles has now challenged W. E. Mason (tho New Zealand champion) for rung 2. Tho Ma6terton Chess Club proposes to send a team down by motor-cars to play the Wellington Club at an oarly daie. The visiting team will consist of about fifteen players. In the. event of »his match taking place.on Saturday, week, the. Npraio' v. Wellington South match will possibly have to be postponed owing to overlapping of membership. DRAUGHTS.
