THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS ' By Glencoe. The Brackcnflcld Hunt Club's meeting will bo held on the Anibcrlcy course on Thursday m»t. Tho flxturo is a toalisator one, and with it racing will end lor the present season. It is tho intention of J. W. Lowe to give Coalition a race in the Braokenlicld Steeplechase. Tho Patronu6 gelding is top-wuight with 12st. 13ib. The opposition ii not strong, and if ho goes to the post the Troutham representative will bo favourite. A win for him will mean an 81b. penalty for the National.
Several Winter Cup candidates will bo seen under silk at tho Brackcnflcld Hunt Club'B meeting next Thursday, Amongst tho number are Kilrush, Hetaua, Hoval Btar, Loyal Arch. Warlike, Will Oakland, and Good Hope.
A prominent defection from tho Winter Oup is Mr. R. A. M'Kcnzio's purchase Suuart, who was regarded as nicely handicapped with lOst. 81b.
The horses trained by J. M'Cracken, of Hastings, who have engagements at tho C.J.O. mcoting, were brought into town from Trcntham last woek, but it was found that the embargo was not yet lifted, and the horses were returned to Trentham.
Followers of form in the South Island are looking to Gaylight to show up prominently in the Grand National Hurdles. This horse has been shaping so well over the obstacles this season as to suggest that a National would not be beyond his tether.
No fewer than Ave Grand National Hurdles candidates—All Talk, .Tack Bymons, Bombproof King Star, and Warform—sported silk in jumping events at Timaru on Thursday. Of their number Jack Symons was the only one to gain winning honours, and the displays of all of them were not sufficiently attractive to onbanca their prospects in the Hiecarton race.
Amongst the horses «ecn out at Washdyke on Thursday was Warform, who clalmi" engagement in the Grand National Steeplechase. Ho shirked the first obstacle, and in trylne to get over the wins came to grief. On this showing his channo of getting- round the Eiccarton course looks a decidedly remote one. Tho veteran stccplcohaser, llorry Lad, was very lame after his exertions in <ho South Canterbury Steeplechase, and it is unlikely that he will be fit to race again for some time.
Tho annual list of statistics compiled hy "Argus," of Christchurch "Star," furnishes a valuable illustration of the growth of stakes in recent years. Never before have there been so many as 39 owners wjo have won over £2000 in a season while the 36 Hires with totals exceeding £M and the 21 horses whose winnings went over £2000 also provide records for pny season in the Dominion.
Itecent mail advico leads to tho conclusion that conditions in Germany *re not quite so bad as supposed. At any rate, the prize-money for the Hamburg Derby has been nearly doubled. nSS, A J ! 'J lliall Jockey Club distribute"! £911.923 (Inclusive of forfeits and is«jpstakes) over 86 races run at its ineetingi" this season. That workß out at the excellent . avcrago of £1155 15s. a raco. fortunate indeed is the muff who has a horso good enough to win at A.J.O. mce'tincu. Tho winning sires' list for the past sea-son-is intere«ting, as for the first time for several owing years Martian haj had to put un with second place. His powers as a producer of winners show no sign of waning, however, as his total is tho largest he has ever had, beating.the previous New Zealand record for c, sire, and..being second only to the figure «»• tablished by Demosthenes this season. tlKMock of Demosthenes won £27,750 ss. 6io'ie w for 0 am?' progeny ' wcro respon -
