The Minister of Education (Mr. C. J. Parr) and the Minister of Justice (Mr. E. P. Lee) left for Chrislchurch during the week-end. Mr, Parr will return tomorrow morning.

Major-General Sir Edward Chaytor, general officer commanding the forces, will visit Aucklnnd this week.

Major Percy M. Acton-Adams (Canterbury) and Mr. Wallace A. Johnston (Auckland) have been admitted fellows of the Royal Colonial Institute.

Dr. Lindo Ferguson, of Dunedin, is a passenger by the Moeraki, which left hore for Sydney ou Friday.

Mr. Joseph Harris, a well-known resident of Napier, died on July 21 in tho Napier Hospital. Deceased was born in London in 1841, and arrived in New Zealand in 1878 with his family. He was with. Messrs. J. B. Harcourt and Co., soft goods merchants, of Wellington, for many years, and later joined up with Messrs, Bing, Harris and Co., Macky, Logan and Caldwell, and M'Eldownoy Bros. Rome fiv« years ago he retired, and settled in Napier. Mrs. Harris, senior, died a. short time after hor arrival in New Zealand. During his early life, the late Mr Harris had many interesting experiences. During tho Franco-Prussian War ho just escaped from Paris to avoid being caught in tho Hun net. He is survived by two sons, Messrs. Ernest S. Harris, of Napier, and Stanley Harris, of Dunedin, and ono daughter, Mrs. J. R. Webb, of Cromwell. Tho death is announced in Auckland of Mr. Patrick Doran, who always took e? very live interest in publio affairs. Mr. Matthew Coshin, an old identity in tho service of the Government, died recently at. the age of 91 years. For ovor a quarter of a century ho was a well known figure among tho Government Buildings messenger staff. Born in Queen's County, Ireland, in 1826, the lute Mr. Cashin served in tho Crimean WaT, and had resided in New Zealand since he was 25 years of ago. Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Taylor, of Kilbiruie, who have been on a trip to tho South Sea Islands, have returned to Wellington. Mr. B. F. Gardiner, president of tho Seatoun Bowling Club, and Mrs. Gardiner, of Seatoun. are leaving on an extended visit to Australia this week. The transfer of three detectives on the staff of the Auckland police force has been arranged. Detective Sweeney, of the central station staff, has been appointed to Invercargill, Detective Young, who carried out his probationary work at Ponsonby, is to do transferred to Greymouth, and Detcctivo De Norville, for many years in charge of tho plain, clothes staff at Newton, is to be alati<wcd nt Whangarci. Detective-Sergeaflt Ward, of Greymouth, and Detective Fitzgibbin, of New Plymouth, have been transferred to Auckland. The Rev. Joseph W. Kemp, pastor- 1 elect of tho Auckland Tabernacle, left Vancouver by the Niagara on Wednes< day for Auckland. Mr. Kemp is ao companied by Mi's. Kemp and their sod and daughter. The Rev. Dr. Camerson (Chancellor of the Otago University Council) is likelj to be laid up for some weeks as a result of his recent motor accident. The Rev. R, B. Gosnell, late of the Wairarapa, has been transferred to tht. Auckland Methodist Mission, filling tho recently-created office of organiser and assistant missioner. Mr. Peter Barr, of Dunedin, has been re-elected unopposed as one of the representatives of Otago on the council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The Christchurcb Trinity Congregational Church has given a call to the Rev. H. J. Huffadine, of Stafford Congregational Church, England, and has received cnblo advice of his acceptance. It is expected that Mr, Huffadine, with his wife and son, will leave at an early date for NewZealand.
