POULTRY NOTES
(By "Chanticleer.") and Matina." A- lecture under the auspices of the Canterbury Circle was given at the Chamber of Gommcrce, when Mr. E. E. MartvJen spoke on tho subject* of "Selection, Mating and Care of the Bree<>rß, and-Incubation." Jlr. J. Liggins (presi dent) occupied the chair. Tho Speaker said it -was not good enough to select a male bird, on his rrood looks—lft was essential that he should be descended- from high layers of good-sized ejres. Lodk for quality in the male and see that he ha-d a good body, broad across tho back, and had aj pood abdomen. It wHs equally important that the bird shouyi havo good carriage, alert appearance,- bright head, and sharp eye. He advised dubbing male birds; they keot up their vitality longer, and the ferOrTy °® the eggs would be found to be better, especially after the fim year. With regard:., to the selection of the females, the characteristics mentioned in tho malo shotfW be looked for. He nreferred two anrf\ three year-old hens—they were more profitable. Breeding from pullets was risky.: A matter of great importance was the care of the breeding hena.. Ono could\not expect if the hens were over-conditioncd or under conditioned. It' waß advisable to feed grain to breeders and in litter. A good breeder would work hard in the litter for its feed,, and continual exercising of Che muscles would bring it into the rfght condition for breeding from. It was essential that the. breeders have a pood supply of green food. He advised more extensive use of oats for the breeders, also they should have a run continually or at leaßt for some part of the day. Mr. Marsden recommended tho chickens hatched early. After 'feeding them for the first few weeks on chicken food and broken wheat, they, should then be fea on oats and mash until the pullets came • to. lay. . There ' was no better food for proving stock than oatq. On the motion ■ of the ohairman, Mr. Mareden was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his . address. To Stop Feather Pioklngr. . - Feather picking iB a common trouble • in the-poultry.house, and it uuts in ita 'unwelcome appearance at all times of the year. The first thing to do in Buch canes is: to see that the birds are free from vermin. Then'rub the bare places with vaseline or other ointment. Provide the birds, with more occupation by making them scratch: for. their food, and by hanging up a-strine bat* containing greenstuff of some kind. More animnl food might 'be aiven, and a little salt added to the soft mash. ,
