NEW TENNIS COURT
ON A CITY RESERVE, v The City Council lias decided that the ?P? r 7„ of tho dircotor of reserves (Mr. J. iUXenzie) with reference to tlie provision of tennis courts at Wesley Read be approved, on conditions s€t forth in the directors report. The report was as follows:— , .. , .... "This portion of tho gardens, about threo acres' in extent, is fenced off for grazing purposes; the horaes from Kelbiirn Aiiu Anderson Parks, also; lepartmont, being grazed there. Tho land is right adjacent to Anderson Park, and practically all tho soclions consist or hill and gully, with the exception of a small area, .1 rood 12.90 poles, at (ho junction .of Salamanca and Wesley lioads;. tlns .is fairly level, and with little oxpense could bo made suitablo for two double tennis courts. I would recommend that whou a club is formed, they.be granted a. lease of this land, Buch_leoso,to lie .drawn up by the City Solicitor, on the following ierms:— 1. Tho club-, leasing the land to bo formed at a public meeting of residents called for that purpose; such meeting to be advertised in tho daily papers. :2.:Tho' annual..subscription and 'enfraace fee to bo approved by tho Reserves Committee, who .will also bo supplied with a copy of tho annual report and balance-sheet.,-, ■ 3.'Rules- of tho club shall provide that a.ballot is taken for the admission of members; no less a proportion than e. majority of these present shall he ablo to exclude candidate at any ballot. i. .£3OO to be spent on tho ground on {onning -asphalt, tennis courts, witltin twelve'.months' from the'time a lease is granted. 5., The word "municipal" to bo embodied in tho name of any such club. A suitablo and proposed name for this club would be "Tho Salamanca Municipal Tennis. Courts." ■ G. The club to be granted the use ci thg-.reserve for .sevon years, rent free; at the end of which time the courts, pavilion, etc., become the absolute property of the council, to. bo used, for such purposes as they think; desirable. ■ "In recommending this application, to the favourable consideration, of tho committee, I am guided by the fact that this .land is outside the gardens proper, and is to all .intents and purposes n waste corner, being used by tho. rcadiuen in the vicinity as a tip. It . is. the only lnnd in that locality suitablo for' the purpose of tennis courts, and -with i the safeguards suggested, will supply, a great pu'biic .want and give pleasure, to n-.any. [ am aware that, it would bo better for tho council to form the courts, and then lease them out, but with our many other pressing heeds, I cannot see any possibility of,, this being dono in the immediate future."
