AN ELECTION CAMPAIGN CASE
INFORMATION AGAINST NEWSPAPER DISMISSED. , By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, July 21. A case which was an echo of the general election campaign was heard before Mr. Free. S.M., this morning, when Colin M'acDonald; editor and publisher of tlio Pahiatua "Herald," was charged upon the information of Robert Beatson Ross, Liberal candidate at the election, that on December 11. 1919. ho published in the Pahiatua. "Herald" an untrue, statu* ment defamatory of Ross, and calculator to influence the votes of electors oa follows"Tho plain facts of the case are that when Mr. R<oss first decided to contest tho seat, lio wrote to tho 'Herald,' announcing tho fact, and adding that this time ho was standing as an Independent." The case contred round a letter whioh Ross allegedly wrote to the "Herald," and which had siuce been lost. MacDonnld produced a witness who lind read the letter, and who r«* membered tho words "this time as an Independent." His "Worship dismissed Hie information, with costs against Ross. Mr. Lyons, of Woodville, appeared for RosS. and Mr. Finney, of Pahiatua, fot AlacDonald. Tho charge was brought under section 158 of tho Legislature Act.
