EX-SOLDIERS AS CROSSINGKEEPERS

At a meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association it was reported that a number of returned soldiers were employed as cross-ing-keepers by the Railway Department at .€3 per we'ek, for which they had to work 60 hours a week, with a period of broken time This involved an absence from home of twelve and a half hours each day. Many of these men before enlisting had been employed by the Department porters on the permanent staff, surfacemen, etc. It was pointed out tlmt crossing-keepers who were not ex-soldiers were doing the same work during less hours at 12s. per day. It was decided to .bring tho mattor under the notice of Canterbury members of Parliament, also of the Prime Minister.
