AMERICA CUP RACE

e WON BY SHAMROCK IV A CLOSE FINISH ByTelejraph-Press Assooiatlon-OopjTiffht New York, July 20. The second race for the America Cup was won by Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht Shamrock IV, which won the first raco as the result of an accident to the America Cup defender, Resolute, whcso throat halliards carried away. The course of the race was a reach to the 1 southxsouth-enst, a beat west-by-north and a reach north-eaat-by-north. The Shamrock's starting time was 15min. ISsec. past noon, noid the Resolute's lGmin. 26seo. past noon. Tho Shamrock had a difficulty with her balloonjib, and the Resolute passed her to leeward at 12.22. The wind was light. The Shamrock's sail-setting was bungled, and the Resolute slipped along smoothly, while her rival's head-tails were not filling well. At 12.50 the Resolute's lalloonsail was acting splendidly, and five minutes later the Shamrock was half a mile , astern on the weather side. At 1 p.m. the Resolute lost tho wind, and at 1.10 the Shamrock passed her to windward, At 1.25 she was leading by a quarter of a mile. The breeze was then hauling- to the south. At 1.45 the Shamrock caught the first breath of the south-wester, and was half a mile ahead. Tho Resolute picked up quarter of a mile, and went to starboard for the mark, then three miles awuy. At 2.2 tho Shamrock followed suit, and turned tho mark at 28min. 2&ec. past 2. . Tho Resolute turned the mark at 32min. Usee, past 2. Tho little triangular forestaysail of the Shamrock was behaving wonderfully, awl kept always full. At 3.15 the Shamrock led by nearly a mile. Tho second mark was turned by the Shamrock at 2Gmin. 29sec. past 4, and by the Resolute at 43min. S&sec. past 4., When the Shamrock turned the Resolute 'was a mile astern, but she sailed fast to the mark, and was gaining, and a close race appeared probable. * As tho Shamrock was nearing the finishing line, a big hole appeared in her balloon jib. The Shamrock finished at 37min. 58sec. past s.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

THE OFFICIAL TIMES. (Rec. July 21, 10.45 p.m.) New York, July 20. : Official—The Shamrock won by 2niin. 26sec.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. \ (Rec. July 22, 1.25 a.m.) New York, July 20. . According to the official record, the ' Shamrock finished at 5.35.G p.m., nnd .the Rosolnto at 5.48.11 p.m. In the last reach the Resolute gained when Hie Shamrock was three miles from the finish, and was only some seconds over her time allowance. A spare, flattening wind reduced the Resolute's chance,— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. / ' , [The international trophy was won by i flie scEooner yacht America, when, at the \invitation of the Royal Yacht Squadron, "to pleasure craft in any part of the world, she took part in the racing at Oowes, and beat eight cutters and seven schooners, on August 22, 1851, over /a course round tho Isle of Wight The ' America was 170 tons, and the second yaobt in the race, Aurora, 47 tons, was beaten by 18 minutes. Sir Thomas Lipton, following several other British yachtsmen, has been endeavouring ever since 1899 to recover it. On his previous attempts he has been beaten in three races of each series. As the Cup is won by two successes out of the three races, it presumably passes at last into his hands, and will have to be challenged for by the United States, and raced i'oi in British waters.] — ME, MASSEY SENDS CONGRATULAI TIONS. ' The Prime Minister has sent the'following cablegram to Mr Thomas Lipton at New York:—"On behalf of New Zealand send you our heartiest congratula tions on Shamrock's -ictory.
