JOCKEYS' RETAINERS

NEW SCALE OP ALLOWANCES. Arising out of .the deputation of jockey* which recently waited upon tho president (Sir George Clifford), the Racing Conference yesterday agreed to _ a new scale for jockeys' fees and retainers. On the recommendn'.iou of tho president the conference affirmed that In the absence of any special agreement to the contrary, the fees payable to jockeys in relation to the net amount payable to tho owner shall be:—

h'or Flat Races.—To a winning mount, in no ease less, than .£2; if the not amount exceeds ~£4O, *£5 per centum thereon. To a jockey of a second or third horse, if the net amount exceeds .£IOO, £'} 10s. per centum thereon. To n jockey other than as above, in no enso lesß than £1. Tf the not amount is .£3O, and docs not exceed .£IOO, ,£2 25,; if tho net amount exceeds .£IOO, but does not exceed 4)1.50, M; it it exceeds ,£l5O, .C 4. For Hurdle Rflces and Slceplochnscs.— To a winning mount, in no case less than .£4 if the net amount exceeds- ,CiO, ,£lO per.centum thereon. To a jockey of a. pecond or third horse, if the net amount exceeds .£IOO. .£lO per centum thereon. The president commented that the conference would no doubt apnreciato the fad that jockovs were entitled (o partievnto in thfe general increase in wages obtaining throughout the Dominion. Personally, he had found jockeys to be absolutely fair-minded and reasonable, and they realised that it would 1* unwise in their own interests to tax th« owners too heavily.
