A PROTEST FROM TARANAKI. A protest against a proposal to erect some additional toll gates fn the vicinity of New Plymouth was made by representatives of the New Plymouth Borough Council, who interviewed tlio Minister of Public Works (Mr Coates) yesterday. The deputation stated that New Plymouth was being surrounded by toll gates, and suggested that the proper way to raise money for road maintenance was by means of a tyre tax. The multiplication of toll gates was going far enough to make the position absurd. Tta Minister said his own experience was that distriots which had toll gates had nlso good roads. The cost of maintaining good roads ecemed to be beyond the capacity of the rates. Ho was aware that Waimate County had spent loan money on roads, but tho result of this method would not bo known until expenditure on renewals and repairs foecama heavy. He assured the deputation that he would not deal witlv tne toll gates wiliout very full consideration, ' ■ "
