Extract from the "Investors' Guardian," London, referring to tho Excess Insurance Co., Ltd.:—The underwriting account of tho last year of the war is. not yot closed, but it is sufficiently near that state not seriously to affect tho ftno results that may now bo considered to havo been achieved by the war years' underwriting. These may be regarded as reflected in tho expansion disclosed by the balance-sheets of 1914 and 1919. The assets at the end of last year were compared with five years before; the resem is .£BOO,OOO instead of the investments in Stock Exchange securities aro £1,880,950, against il00,!ll)3, and of these invest-! ments those.in British Government securities havo an unreduced cost value of £1,439,179, against £11,180 at the end of 19U. The company's position is noiv one of remnTkable strength, the balances on the 1918 and 1919 underwriting accounts total £1,447,349, while tho icservo fund is £800,000. ' The investments in marketable securities stand at £1,880,950 when the reserve for depreciation has been deducted, and of the investments about 70 per cent, are in British Government securities. The company performed good service in undertaking great risks in the war years; the directors, in pursuance of that policy of building up resources that has made British insurance companies so strong, that has added substantially to the national wealth, nnd enabled the companies in a most valuable measure to assist the nation in shouldering the burden of war finance, have not distributed to shareholders uny of the large underwriting profits earned, but have kept the dividends paid much below the revenue received from investments. That policy is still being followed, and now, when the business of insurance is threatened with a renewal of keen competition, because of many r.ew arrivals attracted to the field by tho success which well-es-tablished, well-managed and financiallystrong concerns have experienced, the Excess Company, with its immense reserves, its widespread connection and its expert management, can fnce the new conditions with sure confidence engendered of dangers faced and passed, and of solid wealth behind it in its investments of over two millions sterling. Tho New Zealand attorneys for the Excess Insurance Co., Ltd., aro Messrs. Sead-Gowing and Craven (N.Z.), Ltd., Hereford Street, Christclvurch.—Advt.
