At Trentham yesterday morning the weather was perfect, and a lot of galloping and scltooling was done by tho different horses carded to ruco on Wednesday. The No. 1 grass gallop was open, but the going was very dead, and at the end of the gallops the horses were stopping badly. All Cerise, who has an engagement in the Trial Plate, pleased her trainer by the' way she went over half a mile in 52Jsec. Her stable companion Admyra was associated with Magistrate over five furlungs, The latter finished iu front in linin. Ssec. Slowcoach and Golden Petal did a strong mile. Mntntuo. went four furlong 9 by himself, getting to tho-end of tho distance in 53sec. The best gallop of tho morning was done by Listowel. who ran half n. niilo in 51Jsec. Gold Kip trotted two rounds and brushed over the last two furlongs. Arch Salute beat Walton over . six furlongs, which took lmin. 22sec. Tame Eox galloped a mile and Tempo went seven furlongs. The junipers Kauri King and Lochella went a mile, but were under a strong pull the whole way. Others to do useful work included Royal Exchange, 80-Peep, Eisingham, Blackhead, Crowhurst. Arran, Astinome, Dainty Stop, Swanee River, Hurry Dp, Comedy Prince, Sanacre, Honey Bee, and Dead Sweet. Amongst the 'chasers Gunnaco, Gladful and Notability jumped n round of the big fences, nil fencing well. Ngakanui and Nicomar did a similar task, the last-named giving a verv lino exhibition. Uoldstream nnd Chummy jumped tho schooling hurdles, as did Falstaff. who made a good impression, and Meltohi-k-off. Mannish did n similar task by himself. Alteration and Fisher ench jumped n .couple of fences, and the latter will strip a very fit horse on Wednesday. Thrnee and Korokone went over thre.o of the hurdles, and the Winter Hurdles candidate gave a good showing, Tho?e who intend being present nt Trentham on Wednesday, will be interested in the special trains which i'rc to run to tU course. There will be n train for racegoers every few minuted from 9.44 a.m. till 11 a.m. Everything points to Wednesday's racing at Trenlhntn being a record openiug day for o. winter meeting. The town Is crowded witli visitors, nnd it only requires the present fine weather to continue and the gathering will be a moat siu-cessful ono. The Railway Department notifies that the railway platform at Lambton will lw cleared after the denirtnre of each raco train. Passengers for the races should therefore travel by th» first train leav ing after thev enter on the platform. Speaking to the writer yesterday, Trainer Christie stated that he had not yet made up his mind which race Lochella would start in. but the indications are that Lochella will be a runner intho Winter Hurdles. The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club was herd on Saturday afternoon, Mr. n. A. Bunny presiding.. It was reported that two trucks nf lime had been spread over the lawn, course and new straight. The erection of the fence for the new six and seven furlong straight had been delayed owing to inability to cceiire Mara timber. Mr. Shannon wrote intimating that his services as judge were available, and the stewards resolved to .defer fillirtg the vacancy until the annual minting. The delegate to the forthcoming conference was instructed to support the proposal that the Government appoint racecourse detcctiven. Messrs. R. J. Southgate nnd J. Pinkey were elected members of- tho club A Press Association cable message from New York states that Man-o'-wnr, a three-year-old colt, set a record for a mile and a furlong, covering the distance in lmin.. 49 l-ssec.
