♦ " ..' POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr. W. 6. Riddell, 8.M., presided over a Bitting of the Magistrates Court yesterday. Robert George M*Neill, 18 years of age, was charged with breaking and entering by night the premises of Tolley and Son with intent to commit a crime. On the application of Chief-Detective Ward he was remanded to Wednesday, when further charges may be preferred against h'im. A youth named Tom Cox, for whom ," Mr. A. B. Sievwright appeared, pleaded guilty to the theft of a blanket, valued at 17s. 6d„ the property of Mary Paris, and to the theft of another blanket, the property of .the Salvation Army: Cox arrived in New Zealand from the Old Country in March last, and having exhausted his funds stole the two blankets, and sold them for 18s. 6d. He had done no work since coming to New Zealand. He was conVioted, and ordered to come up for'sentence when-called upon within six months, He was also ordered to refund the sum of 18s. Gd. within a fortnight. William George Allen pleaded guilty to the theft of M in money, the property, of the Yat.CA. Allen became possessed of a collecting card in connection with the Y.M.C.A. Building •Fund, obtained £1, and converted it to nis own use. He was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. On a charge of stealing at Wanganui a cheque for .£2O, the property of AVilliam Wallace M'Clennand, . fie was remanded to appear at Wanganui on July 20. , ' Convicted of drunkenness for the fourth time, George Corrigall was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment. ' - George A. Thurston was ordered to pay 103. a .week towards the Bupport of each nf his four children, who are in the Wellington Receiving Home. Charles S. M'Cabe. who was in arrear with maintenance payments to ' the • amount of £18 10s., was sentenced to two ■ months' 'imprisonment, the warrant to ml suspended so long as 20s. a week is paid The original maintenance order of \£2 15s. was reduced to £1 10s. John Green was ordered to pay 30s. n weok towards the support of his wife and children. G. S. Hodgkinwm was ordered to pay 455. a week towards the maintenance of his wife and children.

Pahiatua Notes. A very pleasant' dance, arranged by the Returned Soldiers' Association, Pahiatua, in honour of the Ladies' Patriotic Society, was held in the Drill Hall at Pahiatua hut week. The hall was beautifully decorated with festoons_ of Chinese lanterns, electric illuminations, evergreens and balloons, and seldom has Pahiatua enjoyed such a successful function. The floor was in excellent dancing order, and the supper was a great success. The music was supplied by Croz- . ier's orchestra, from Jlarton, and was • -excellent. During the evening Dr, Peterson, on behalf of the R.S.A., presented the Mayoi'css.(Mrs._J. D. C. Crewe) with a handsome vase,'in the form of a Herman 7.7 ,shell-cnse, the handles being jniiiiature rilles, and with 'the badge of the Ruahine Regiment in the centre. Engraved on the shell were the words s "Presented to Mrs. J. D. C. Crewe, Mayoress, by the Pahiatua Returned Soldiers' Association in grateful remembrance of" services rendered during the war, 19H-1918. T> Dr. Paterson spoke about the fine work done by the Pahiatua Ladies' Patriotic Society during the war, and he regretted that the association was unable to present every member with a token of appreciation. : He also spoko of the excellent work done by Mrs. Crewe as head of the- socitty. Mrs, Crewe thanked the association very much for the handsome present, and said \ahe would hold it amongst her most treasured possessions. Hedges, Larsen, Cook, R, Sedcole, Whitcombe, Kelly (Konini), Henderson, Burrell, Wainwright, G. Taylor, J. D. C. Crewo, Welsh, Payne, Ransom, Misses Arrow' (2), Gregory, E. Biscet, Hedges, Whitcombe, Geange, Boyd.
