CITY MILK SUPPLY
MID-WINTER DIFFICULTIES. Now that the Board of Trade has fixed Is. sd. per gallon as the pries to be paid for July milk- at Featherston, it is not anticipated that there will be any further trouble respecting milk supplies this winter. The price fixed means that by the time the milk fs delivered into the milk station m Wellngton it will have cost Is. Bd. per Ballon, or 2d. more per quart than the OtnkWre Horo milk costs. The milk supply everywhere-thanka to a mild winter and well-distributed warm rains-is beginning already to show signs of improvement, and in another month it is exacted that tho supplies will be so augrnen ed as to dispose of all anxiety for the current season at all events. What the future holds none can say. The growing demand for milk for purposes other than the supply of the city, promises to be so insistent that it is impossible to sea very far ahead. There are those who hold that the Wellington .City. Council, will have to go in for a big dairy, farm if a reliable winter supply of, milk is to be ensured. Tho high prices now bein ß offered for milk for this or that purpose have made it possible for the dairy farmer to confine his labour to tho nine months of the year wlr» the weather is tolerable, cutting ;■ he I three J'inter months. Into'. Miiy farmers in the Wellington disliv mve already gone out of winter milking al'Tho "council still has to consider whether the increase will be passed on to the public.
