Experience had shown that boxing was a sport that required to bo carefully handled and . controlled, for once it began to go down it would go down rapidly.' They did net want'.to sec the sport deteriorate. Lately ho had heard a-good deal of talk in regard to ecino contests held by the association, and : there had been a good deal of comment about the last contest'. It had been stated that there had been a good deal of betting outside'and inside the hall. He had heard it said that even members were not above betting. This was an evil that they must put down with a strong hand. . He for one would not remain a member of the association for five minutes if it were proved to his satisfaction that a member of the association had indulged in betting. It was pointed out that there was a rule which enabled tho committeo to expel any member found guilty of betting in respect to a boxing contest, and a motion that "the rule should 'be put into forco whs carried. It was suggested that the new committee should consider tho advisability of. engaging a professional boxer to conch the boys in the various colleges and schools, and this matter is to receive consideration, PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Considerable interest attaches' to the provincial amateur championship at the Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday nest, not alone because of tho knowledge that the local amateurs have shown remarkable improvement this season, but becauso of the consequent selection of a team to represent Wellington at the New Zealand championships at tho end of the month. Following tho rule adopted at championship meetings, the bouts will bo adjudicated upon by two judges (Messrs. J. E. Staplcß and P..W. Woods), and only in case'of these failing to agree will the Tefereei be asked to give a decision. Mr. Allan Maxwell, onetime lightweight champion, .will be the referee on the first evening, and Mr. Earl Stewart will referee on the second night. The latter has also been appointed referee at tho New Zealand meeting at, Hastings. On each evening oleven or twelve bouts will be staged.
