Wellington ia now the possessor of a household centre where home sciences will be taught, and where hours of work will be ohserved as in ordinary commercial pursuits or in institutions such as hospitals. Applicants for the status of housohold orderly will enter on probation, during which time their aptitude and taste for the work will be tested as a probationer nurse js tested for the nursing profession. After qualifying, tho applicant will go to work daily from the hostel, the employer being approved by the council and subscribing to their rules as 18jarda hours and conditions of work, aud as regards payment. The household orderly earns her own fees and pays her own way as any independent working woman; she must keep up the honour of her profession, but otherwise the only compulsory observances are such as must exist in any community life. ' The life should appeal to many women who like work-in the house, but who up to the present have preferred anything rather than tho isolation of the ordinary domestic worker. It is no wonder that the average woman prefers a.corporate life trith chances of iseeting congenial spirts,, of making friends and developing .hobbies/ It is hoped that such, opportunities will be opened to' the domestic worker by the household orderly 6j'steni. v Help the Orphans. The institution has been in existence for 40 years or more, and during that time has passed hundreds of children through its doors.
