WIDE RANGE OF REMITS
DISCUSSED
QUESTION OF NEW MARKETS
Tlio Council of Agriculture concluded its deliberations yeetevtluy afternoon. The president (Mr. J. Turiibull)'was in the chair, and a wide range of subjects was discussed. Conveyance of Stock.
' Sir Walter Buchanan (Wairarapa) ' moved: "That faster trains for conveying , stock to and from shows should bo pre- , vided by the ltaihvay Department, also that a/carriage for stock attendants bo 1 provided on all show stock trains, and 1 that representation be made to the Min--1 istor of Railways on the subject." ! Tho mover outlined various directions in which improvements might bo made by the Department. The.present facilities, he said, were very unsatisfactory. The remit was adopted without discussion. . Another Waiinrapa remit which was • unanimously adopted ran as follows: ' "That the Railway Department be asked j to allow sufficient feed for journey and for show period to bo conveyedin trucks , with show stock on show trains, and i failing this concession, that a special L truck be added to show stock trains for ' conveyance of fodder, poles, forks, etc." 1 A remit was adopted urging tho Raili way Department "to reviso the excessive charges for the carriage of pigs to shows, ■with a view to bringing them into line with other show stock.'' Stallion Inspection. A conflict of opinion was disclosed with regard to the following remit from Tarnnoki: "That with a view to improving the breeding of horses, tho Government | be urged to prevent any stallion being ! placed at stud that has not passed a veteiinary examination." t In opposition to the proposal it was explained that on account of the shortage of stallions considerable hardship would bo inflicted on many horse-owners if legislation was enacted on the lines suggested, The Director-General of Agriculture (Dr. C. J. Reakes) strongly commended the remit to the conference, pointing out that it was the only means of holding hereditary diseases in check. Tho remit was carried. New Markets. The committee set up to go into tho question of new markets tabled its recommendations. The council decided to approach lhc< Government to ascertain whether it woiild legislate with a view to providing funds for the purposo of making inquiries as to foreign markets for New Zealand meat; the basis of providing such funds- being per head of sheep -owned in New Zealand. Sir Walter Buchanan, and Mr. J. D. Hall were appointed a committee to meet delegates from the Farmers' Union and the sheepowners' conference, and to ask that theso bodies be topresontcd on a committee— along with the council—to act with the Board of Agriculture to obtain the information in question and to faTco further action if necessary. A Matter of Finance. . The fact that A. nnd P. societies nro handicapped in' their efforts to provide adequate accommodation for exhibiting breeders through •••lack of "funds was emphasised by a T'araiiaki delegate in tabling the following remit: "That legislation be trained' whereby the Government financial institutions shall be given power to grant loans to A, and P. societies on similar conditions to thoso on which money is advanced to local bodies." The remit was carried. Pedigree Stock, A remit was; carried requesting the Government to give more encouragement to tho importers of pedigree slock. It was mentioned that tho South African Government subsidised _ shipping companies in connection with the carriage of pedigree stock. Various Other Remits, In the faco of .wine opposition, tho majority of tho delegates affirmed that the timo was ripe for bringing into effect the resolution passed at tho 1914 conference regarding ear-marking and branding of sheep and cattlo. Unanimously it was decided to request tho GoveVnuient to reconsider tho amount of compensation allowed for condemned cattlo with a view to increasing same, A Hawke's Bay remit which was adopted urged .that judging demonstrations on ferm live-stock bo given at agricultural shows by Government expert lecturers and that the offiews of tho Department of Agriculture should assist in organising the same. Following on a discussion Tokitive to tho necessity for carefully revising the list of show judges, the conference decided to urge on A. and P. associations and breeders' clubs the necessity of keeping the official list of judges up-to-date. Officers Elected. The following were elected to fill vacancies on the Executive Council:—North Island: Messrs. Q. Donald, W. Perry and E. A. Campbell; South Island: Hon, A. L. Hawke and Messrs. R. W. loclihead and W. D. Pike. =====
