ICEBREAKER RESCUES THE SOLOVEI. (Rcc. July 5, 10 p.m.) London, July' 5. Captain Sverdrup reports the rescue of tho Solovei, winch was drifting in Kara Sea. Tho icebreaker Sviatogor encountered masses of- old polar ice in the Kara Sea, and steamed north-west, to find new and more penetrable ice. Tho Sviatogor reached tho Solovei by running into the pack-ice full steam ahead, using all her ten boilers. Even then she was sometimes beaten back, but she attacked tho pack again and again, though at times obliged to make ten or ft dozen efforts, as the ice was twenty feet thick in places. Finally tho roscun ship brought the Solovei, with 87 persons on board, to Archangel.—Aus.-N.Z.' Cable 46314 [A cablegram received recently an. nonnred that the British fee breaker Sviatogor was then preparing at Bergen to rescue the Solovei, which was drifting westward of the Kara Sea. The crew of the Solovei had abandoned efforts to reach land, and were awaiting tho ex. pected rescue before the melting of the ice.]
