RAILWAY RETURNS
For tile four-weekly period ended May 29 the revenue for the North Island railways was ,£271,734 18s. 6d., and the expenditure .£199,035 3s. 10d.; and for the South Island railways, the revenue was £197,745 6s. 5d., and the expenditure ,£105.171 10s. 3d. These figures denote that, whilst the return for tho korth Island shows that the percentage of revenue (with 1232 miles open for traffic) was 63.57 per cent., that for the South Island (with 1727 miles) was 78.16. Tho grand total of revenue for the four weeks under review was JG469.-iBO 4s. lid., as against JC487.751 8s lOd. for the corresponding period of-last year—a falling off of ,£18,271 3s. lid., whilst on the expenditure si()e the total increased by £09.006 3s- H<l- , , r nn Tho total Tevenue to May 29 nom the beginning, of the financial year" £1,009,890 10s. 9d„ as' compared with £935,648 13s. 2d. for the corresponding rear, and the expenditure ,£725,000 •».
