FROM PLAYING FIELD TO THE LEGISLATURE

"To many of us the fact that a man has played in a great school eleven and for England' proves that lie -s of _ a character which is likely to make him a useful servant of his country and of the Legislature," said Sir Francis Bell, (Leader of the Legislative Council) yesterday in moving that the Council record its Tegret at the death of'the Hon. George Randall Johnson. The deceased gentleman was one of the last survivors among the councillors who were appointed when the tenure of office was foi; life. Sir Francis Bell stated that Mr. Johnson was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and played cricket for his school, for his university and for the Gentlemen of England. Hi 6 son had followed in his footsteps, and had also played for Eton, Cambridge, and England. "Ho was a man in his time very well known, very much liked,-, and very much respected," said the Leader of the Council. "I am ono of tlioso who had the privilege of being his friends. He was an honourable gentleman in every' sense of the word. I ask the council to join in recording our sense of his services and our sympathy with his widoy and family." Sir Jolm Sinclair, who was a. member of the Lower House while Mr. Jphnson was a member of the Council, seconded the motion, jand added his tribute to that of Sir Francis Bell.
