THE , NEW APPOINTMENTS • It has . already been . announced that the Government intends to appoint some halt a dozen new members to tho Legislative Council. It way- row bo stated with some degree of certainty whb these new members are to be. tn the first place, the two members who retired on June 27: by effluxion of time are to be reappointcd-lfessre. C. A. C. Hardy and w. Earnshaw. The new members, ina iindtntal, will ifce the Hon; E. Mitchelson, of Auckland, a former memoftno House and of the Ministry; Colonel G.J. Smith, a member of the' Council until 1914, and some time Commandant at filing Camp during the war; Mr. Mark Cohen,. lately editor of the JJunedm Evening Star"; Mr. E. Clark, who represented Chalmers from 1308 till ir -r! n c it House of Representatives; Mr. K. bcott, who sat for many years in the House for Otago Central, and was defeated at last, elections for Walcatipu, his SBafc hflvinj? disjippcflrcd owinff to the alteration of boundaries; and Mr. P. J. NeTheny a retired builder and contractor, of Auckland, and a member of the City Council and othor local bodies. It la understood that two of these appointments were agreed upon in the ii? Government, tint both of them were made at the instance of Sir Joseph Ward's side of tho Government, and that the two he recommended were Colonel Smith and Mr. Nerheny.
