"MILK AND HONEY"

PLENTY IN MARLBOROUGH 1 FAST STEAMER NEEDED The future of Marlborough', an important centre in the area, covered ly the activities of the Central Progress League of Wellington, was the subject of a conference between' Colonel G. Mitchell M.P., organiser of the Wellington League,, and Mr. WillLawson, the Marlborough Organiser, who is on n. visit to Wellington. The result' of the meeting of organisers was that the Marlborough Progress Committee is assured of tho help of Wellington in its efforts to secure the completion of four important national aims, namely, tho completion of tho South .Island Main Trunk Line, a daily fast ferry between Wellington and Picton, the clcecr settlement of lands, and the provision of hydro-electric power for' Marlborough, Nelson, and the Buller. Mr. Lawson states that Marfborough' people will much appreciate Wollington'a interest in their province, and said that' there were undoubted indications that a closer communication between Wellington and would soon be established. "Colonel Mitchell told me," said Mr. Lawson, '"that ho wa9 ip touch with tho Wellington manager of the Union Company, who had promised to advise him immediately a. definite announcement could be made as to, when.the now service between Wellington and . Picton would be started, and whieli steamer would be employed. "It is persistently rumoured in Marlborough that the Loongaria,, a fast turbine steamer, is to be put'on the ciossStrait run. In conection with this, a Wellington man said to'me'that 'if the Union Company put the Ldongana on this run they would be giving ©very progress league in New Zealand a lead,' meaning that this 18-knot steamer v.onld bo ahead of the times. But I assure you that such a vessel would double ihe traffio on this run. When.you remember that Picton is one milo'and a'half "nearer Wellington than Otaki, and that the Sounds offer attractions not equalled anywhere, it is easy to picture the Loong-ma a full ship' right through the summer. Tho Pateena is a ful ship every trip now. The problem of accommodating the visitors will be Marlborough's part of the business.. In this direction, active • steys are being taken already, Jiotl; in Picton and Blenheim. . "The milk famino prevailing in Wellington at present is another argument for a daily steamer to and from Marlborough, which is literally a land flowing with milk and honey. Tou can have both of'these commodities in any quantity you wish, if you will help us to get that daily steamer, and many other benefits besides," said _ the Marlborough organiser ill conclusion.
