THE DAIRY INDUSTRY
SPEECHES AT SMOKE CONCERT. By Telegraph—Special Reporter.' Palmorston North, June 24. The annual smoke concert in connection with the National Dairy bhow was vory largely attended to-night. Major Dunk (chairmau of the Winter Show Committee) presided. • Mr. W. M'Kenzio, president of tho association, proposed the toast 'The Department of Agriculture." In doing so he pointed out tho good tho Dairy Department had done. . They should insist on every herd having a purebred sire at its head, and in cases whe/e the owner could not afford this, the, Department •should assist financially. . . ■ Mr. Singleton, of : the \ln.iry.. section, in responding, said it was satisfactory to knoiv that the quality of the dairy produce had improved with its increase in volume. He wns glad to notice that tliero was a greater demand for the sevvices of instructors on farms. It was hoped that the twelve instiuctors would soon bo joined by a dozen move, and this would make for improvement in tho quality of dairy produce. It was satisfactory to note that improvements suggested by the officers had been carried out amicably by dairymen generally. Ho spoke strongly of the necessity of cow-toting as good development 'work. Fully 14,000 head had been tested this year. He gave instances where dairymen had increased their output of but-ter-fat by culling inferior cows from k tlie herd.. Ho stressed the importance of purebred sires for doveloping tho herds and increasing the output. At present they were only testing 3 per cent, of tho cows in tho Dominion, and this.should be considerably increased. _ Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., proposed "The National Dairy Association and tho Factory Managers' Association." Ho pointed'to the fact that neithor the association nor tho Winter Show had ever looked back. The association had achieved great things for the factories, and had been well backed up by tho managere, whose work was not always appreciated as it was deserved. With the increased value of land in the Myiawatu district to-day, farmers were living a life of luxury unknown in the early days. With the' advent of hydro : electrio power their position would bo still further improved. Mr. A. C. Morton, president of the association, in responding, expressed regret that tho staffing of the Dairy Department was not keeping pace with the increase in the industry, and trusted that the staff would shortly be increased. Mr. M'Ewen spoke on behalf of the factory managers. Mr. A. Conway proposed "H.M. Trade Commissioner." - Mr. R. AV. Dalton, in acknowledging the compliment, referred to the importance of all assisting in tho reconstruction of British trade. He was sure that in a very short timo Britain would bo in a sound position again, and better than ever before. Britain would be prepared to 'take all New Zealand _ could supply, and would bo in a position to supply all New Zealand wants. He was pleased to find a trend in tho Dominion to trade with the Mother Country, and he was satisfied that in a short time the Home Country would get back all the colonial trade which it had lost during the past'five years. In replying to interjections, "What About Profiteering?" Mr. Dalton said that Britain had been honest, and waa supplying the Dominions with its exports at the lowest price possible. Several other toasts were honoured, interspersed with musical items.
