CHARITABLE AID
CONTINUING TO INCREASE. According to a_ return placed before the Charitable Aid. Board yesterday by Mr. G. J. Pcthericlt, chairman of the Charitable Aid Committee, the volume of relief granted continues to increase. The return, which dealt with the month of May, and included comparisons with the'same month in tho years 1919 anil 1918,' was as follows:— Outdoor Relief. 1920 1919 1918 Number of cases ... 105 70 42 Daily average number of ■ persons receiving relief ... 385.6 279.7 120.3 Rations granted 882 701 409 Cosh grants ,£263 .£l5O <£31 Children maintenance £11 <653 iC22 Indoor Belief. Daily average number of persons receiving relief 95.4 94.5 94.1 Mr. C. M. Luke said the serious item of the return to his mind was the increase in, cash grants from .-£3 l to <£263 in two years. Mr. Petherick stated that this was to bo accounted for principally by tho fact that tho committee > was paying a good deal more now in the way of rents than in previous years. The payment of rents no behalf of needy persons was the heaviest call on the financial side.
