TRAMWAY RETURNS
Reforring yesterday to the tramway returns, the llayoj (Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P.) said that he thought the published figures for April and May could be regarded ns satisfactory. Tho percentage of working expenses to revenue fpr the four weeks ended May 26 had been eon-' siderobly, higher than, in tho precedins period, but this was accounted for largely by special payments to the workers under the recent agreement. .Back 'pay, to cover retrospective liad amounted to about JS62U. This was not a recurring charge, and the accounts fotf June ought tp show a; much better percentage. I
TJie tramways undertaking, added tho Mayor, was going to require careful' finance and tho loyal co-operation of tho' employees and >th/e .'travelling public. With' this loyal co-oporation and with, reasonable good fortune in other respects, the tramirays ought not to cause the council much anxiety for some time, provided always that no further increased costs had to be' incurred.
