WAR MEMORIAL

MEETING OF PETONB COMMITTEE,

A meeting of the Petono War Memorial Committee was held last evening, tho Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) presiding over a good attendance. Mr. G. London proposed that consideration of the expenditure of the money be deferred for another twelvo months, as by then a form of memorial, better than that upon which tho committee had decided—a monument— might bo available. If his request were compiled with, ho would be prepared to make n donation of .£SO to the fund.

The Mayor replied that the committee had practically committed itsolf to tho monument scheme, and could rot now afford to procrastinate in proceeding with its erection. A Hall of Momorios had been suggestod as a suitable form of commemoration, but the monument scheme had been decided upon. Mr. M'Ewan advocated getting on with tho work. '

Mr. Hancock suggested the section opposite the railway station ns an admirable site upon which tho monument could bo erected.

Several members woro of the opinion that if the monument were orected on the site opposite the station it would be dwarfed by the large buildings ip close proximity to the section, Tho jfayov that tho secretary write to the Coromandel Granite Company with a view to'opening up r-.ego-fciaticms for the preparation of tho plans nnd specifications.

Mr. Brockeibank seoonded tho motion, which was carried.
