ADDITIONAL BONUS SOUGHT. By Telecranh—Pres3 AaEooiation. Christchurch, Juno 15. In tho Arbitration Court to-day, Mr, R. D, Martin, for the Christchurch Retail fihop Assistants' Union, asked for an additional bonus of (is. a week. Mr. Cooper, for tho omployers, opposed the_ application as far as it applied to juniora, but not in respect to adults. Ho said that if tho Court could not omit the juniora it- should take advantage of tho granting of tho bonus to remove inequalities in ditt'ercnb, grades. The increases in wages had been particularly ragged. The position was having a bad and unsettling effect all round, to both employers and einployeos. Some employees were overpaid,. and eomo were underpaid. Mr. Martin said a pornicious system was operating in tho drapery trade in respect to girls' wages. ' Mr. Cooper said his remarks applied to 1 the ]umor mains, not to the girls. Mr. Martin said that married women, whose husbands were in good positions nml could support two or thrco motorcars, were engaged in tho industry to tho exclusion of singlo women. It wan an evil that should be legislated against. His Honour said the application would be considered.
