Grodnow scored three goals. —Press Assn. LOCAL MATCHES / The grounds were very heavy for the local competitions on Saturday. Tho Pctone No. 2 ground was found to bo under water, and the gamp Petono v. Newtown had ti'- bo played on tho Hutt recreation ground. The Newtown team Buffered their irst defeat this Beaßon, Petono winning by 13 points to 4. At Newtown Park, Suburbs defeated Athletic.
PETONE (13) v. NEWTOWN (4.). Newtown were handicapped by having to play several -substitutes, tho change of venue apparently misleading some of tho team. Newtown had the advantage of the sun during the first half. Tne opening stages were marked by fast, open play. Both sides made the gaino open, uut .the defence was very solid, and no score ivaß' registered until, from a good loobo forward rush, Childs scored near the comer fot Petone. Tho kick failwl. Even play followed until the end of the first h:Jf, Praser mid Pollock for Newtown, and Ohilds and Zimmerman for Petono doing a lot of good service for their respective sides. On resuming' Petono were awarded a penalty, and Whilley goaled. Newtown made strenuous efforts, and from two penalties Woolf succeeded in placing the ball betwean the posts from difficult angles. Xiintaining.the pressure, Newtown were nearly across on two occasions, their attack just lacking the necessary finish. \ Petone then took chargo of the game, and made things very willing. Nicholls obtained possession and kicked high. The ball badly beat the full-back, and Nicholls regaining, scored alongside the posts. Whitley converted. Shortly after a combined forward rush enabled Childß to score his second try, Whitley's kick again being successful.' Fast play enßued, but no. further Bcores were registered. Mr. G. Bradley was roferee. , , . SUBURBS (33) v. ATHLETIC (9). The Athletic team was very weak, moit of their prominent players evidently thinking that the grounds were, too bad to play. Suburbs had matters all their own way in the flrst Bpell, but during the B.econd half play was much mors even; Mr. W. Martin was referee.. JUNIORS. Suburbs defeated Eovers at Emerson Streot by 40 points to nil. Petono North easily defeated Petono at Hutt Park.
The Central-Athletic fixture was not played owing to the bad state of the ground.
The combined team to meet Auckland at Auckland loaves Wellington on Wednesday. They will be accompanied by the two selectors, Messrs. Garrard (Christchurch) and Buckland (Wellington). . After the gnuie the team to represent New Zealand in the first test match against tho English team 'at Chrißtchureh will bo selected.
