About 7 o'clock on Saturday morning, while the cablo steamer Iris was l«avin" the Thomdon breastwork in a, 1-eavy fog, she collided with tho Philomel, which was lying nest to her. It is stated that the signal to go ahead was misunderstood, with the result that the vessel wont astern until 6ho struck tho bow of tho Philomel. Considerable damage was done to tho ship's stern.. Tho stern platform was smashed and part of tho after rigging was carried away. Tho damage was mostly confir'ed to the upper part of the • ship, and evidently did -not interfere with her working, as she left tho harbour shortly after 7 o'clock yesterday morning foi\ Cook Strait to carry out repairs to No. 4 cable, which was damaged during tho last big southerly.
