HOCKEY

CITY GAMES. The hockey competitions were carried a stage further on Saturday last. High scores were registered in most of the big games, but play was not of as high a standard as it might have been. v HEN'S SENIOR COMPETITION. WELLINGTON T. UNIVERSITY. The above game was closely contested, and at times exciting, but neither team is particularly fast, and play was eencraliy characterised by heavy hitting, with little of that pretty stick play and short passine that make hockey so attractive, ins University players, however, are keen, and may be congratulated on their good slrnwinir against their older and more experienced opponents. Wellington are a ."olid combination, and are jure, to be well in the miming lor the champlonßhM again this year. The total scores were:-Wel-lington, 2; University, 1. , Ashwin and Ohamnness registered for Wellington, «nd Stainton for 'Varsity. Mr. J. Scott was ■ referee. HUIA V. UNITED. After closely running -the redoubtable • Wakatu team and defeating Central, followers of the game were surprised to seo the youthful Huia team go down to United W the tuno of 5 goals to 2. Hula aro light and speedy and made things willing ■ right to tho Bnal whistle. They possess a good forward division, and aro noted for clean, neat play, but United carried too many guns, and the efforts of their backf frequently brought to nought some pretty passing bouts by the Huia men. United ' played an all-round consistent game, and I thoroughly deserved the win. Tho scores , wore: United 6; Huia 2. Boyd (3),Epieny (2), and Elchards (1) were the scorers for 1 United, and Littlejohn and Hailwood for Huia. RAMBLERS V. KARORI. ' Ramblers walkod away from Karori by i the big score of 8 goals as against their , opponents' 3. Karori put up a game, fight, but lacked tho ability to put the fipishing ■ touches on some promising pieces of pl»y. Ramblerß played a better game than on » the previous Saturday, when they rret ' Wakatu. For Ramblers scores were registered by Loder (3), Smith (2), Heaphy Prederickson. and Johnston. Mr. Gfngej was referee. WAKATU V. CENTRAL. ! Wakatu made no mistake about beating Central, the 6Coro being 6-3. Wakatu mado ■ things willing right from tho bully, and it soon became evident that Central stood no ohance of winning. The play wae somewhat scrappy and uninteresting. The scorers for Wakatu were Wilson (3), Hood,' Whittaker, and Btratton, and Cathro netted Central's pair, Mr. Edwards was referee. . 1 HUTT VALLEY V. ST. AUGUSTINE'S. r Playing on Petono Recreation Ground, Hutt succeeded in defeating St. Augus-. • tine's by 5 goals to 2. This leaves Karori ' and St. Augustine's as candidates for tho ■ wooden spoon, with no wins to their ■ credit. The mecttoi' of the above terral) ! Is suro to be interesting. Mr. Lloyd m» referee. v JUNIOR GAMES. In the Huia v. University B contest Huia showed up to advantage, and by good combined play never left the issue in doubt. The score was: Huia 5. University i B 1. Clark (2) Guy (2), and Butcher (1) 1 Bcoredfor Huia, and M'Nab for 'Varsity.
