OTAKI MEETING

RED RIBBON WINS THE CUP OPEN SPRINT TO 80-PEEP (Special Reporter.) There was perfect weather for tlie holiday at Otaki, nnd a record crowd attended the opening of the winter meeting. The trains from Thorndon were crowded with oxcursionists, and standing room only was the order of things for the 8.45 a.m. and the 9.22 a.m. trains. Many hundreds had congregated at Thorndon hefore the platform was opened for tho 8.45 a.m. train, and at one time one of the ticketselling windows had to bo closed on account of the shortage of change, and later tho seller ran out of tickcts. Each person had to show liie ticket before being admitted to tho platform, and as all the gates were not open, this caused a good deal of congestion. Tho trains ran well to time, and visitors reached tho course in ample timp. for tho first race. The totalisator proved too small for tho business offering, and long delays took place in each race before tho signal to Btart waß given. This made tho last race over half an hour late, nnd hundreds left the courso after tho decision of the Taipua Handicap. The racing was keen, and there were many unexpected results. Tho totalisator handled £33,376, as against £30,046 on tho.same day last year.

THE RACINC DESCRIBED. Achilleon, Ohant Itoyal, and Sir Wai wero all well backed in the big field that contested the Jlaideu llace. Chant Royal began Bmartly, and soon put a break on Marveillo and Tu/> Digger, who were at the head of the others. .Chant Itoyal was still in the van entering the straight, but The Digger and' Sir Wai closed on her in the run home, and in tho last few strides The Diggir got his head in front. Sir Wai was a length away, and then came Paparaku, Larkspur, and Regard. Crucelle, Itoyal Exchange, Stutter, and Vitella wero all evenly backed in tho Flying Hack Handicap. Itoyal Exchange and Zephland led Vitella into the straight, where i'ankeo Dan and Stutter were prominent. Zephland faded in the run home, and Eoyal Exchange won comfortably from Yankee Dan and Stutter. Militaire and Princess Marion wero the next to finish. The 'winner has now -won three raoci on this course, but alio has regularly failed elsewhere. Cheddar afid Gatha wero scratched for tho Steepleclvaee, leaving eleven runners. The jumping wib good for one and a half miles, when Master Webster struck tho hencoop and came down, l'arawanui and Pauwerowero were in tho van for a circuit, when Silent Dick and Husabye moved up. Gaokwar joined the loaders five furlongs from home, and, jumping well, tho old gelding gained ground at each fence. Ho ran in an easy winner from Pauwerewere, -with Applaud several lengths awa.y. silent Dick was fourth, and Huehabye was next. Combustion fell at the back of tho course, and Flamingo was pulled up . Tho Baultawa Cup was a very keen betting race. Depredation finished up favourite. with Bonnie Heather, Punka, aud Detroit following in public OBteem. Cyresian was unruly at the barrier, and was placed behind tho field. Soon after the start Eoso Pink and Cyresian took charge, and they led down tho back from Nobleman and Penury Rose, with Red Ribbon. Depredation, and Punka in tho roar. Depredation got a nice run on the rails, and headed RO6O Pink at tho straight entrance. Ho looked to be winning easily, but Red Ribbon finished very strongly, nnd got up on the post. Detroit camo from ft long ■way back and got third place, and then came Rose rink. Bonnie Heather (failed badly, and apparently could not act in the going, while Punka got a bad passage. The winner was ridden by E. Lowe, and over tho last furlong her great staying powers stood to lier. , Printemps and Utuwai divided favouritism in the Otaki Hack Handicap. The pair were in the van till the straight ■was reached, when Sweet Song t took charge, and ran in a comfortable winner from Printempß, who got up on the fence and boat Utiavai for second, place. Persian Prince was fourth. Cyresian and -Consultation were tlie only withdrawals from the Taipua Handicap, 80-Peep being made a short-priced favourite. Sho was badly positioned at the half journey, but from this point sho made up her ground rapidly, and in the straight Bho overhauled Trentham Rose and Gold Problem, who had mado all the running, and won easily. Matatua finished well in second place. Gold Problem was two lengths away third, and then

came Rawakore. Seratchings reduced the Birthday Welter Handicap Hold to nine, and Kyoto, Admiration, and Miss Land wer& backed m the order named. Tho field got away well, but after going a furlong Willys Knight went to the front, and he laßted long enough to beat Trodigal. Admiration waß third", a length further back. DETAILED RESULTS. AUCKLAND MEETING BIG HURDLE RACE WON BY LOCHELLA. GLEN CORNWALL By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Auckland, Juno J. The first day of the Great Northern Steeplechase Meeting waß a. great BU ° ces . B ' Notwithstanding the threats ai c-f Labour leaders and rumouis of strikes the attendance vas fully up ? ,ve X' age, and there was no disturbance or friction of any kind. The weather was beautifully fine, but the going waa_ rather soft and holding. The totaliaator handled £82,204. an increase of £21,966 compared with the corresponding day last year. The Jervois Handicap (First Division) was won comfortably by Royal Abbey, who came away at six furlbngs. and from tnat stago never left tlio race in doubt. Garryowen was made a hot favourite in the Maiden Steoplechase, but Oakleigh and Yankee Jack were alsowell backed. With about a inilo gone, ORkleigh, Garryowon, and Yankee Jack headed the fielU in that order. Going up the hill the second time Garryowen ran up to Oakleig 1, and they approached the next obstacle side bv side. Here Garryowen and lankeo Jack fell. The former was remounted-and raccd home in company with John Bunny, but Oakleigli had placed too big a gap between himself and the other two, and won easily. John Bunny beat Garryowen by several lengths for second place. Sir John was fourth. Scrap-o'-Paper was the quickest to move in tile Jervois Handicap (Second Division), uut ho waa soon' steadied down and kept ill a good position. He camo to the front again in the straight, anil looked, like A winner, but Noata, who had held e. htindy position from the start, came with great dash and snatched the victory in the last few strides. Khubla-i-Khan was a good third, and Scottish Knight was fourth. Asterina looked dangerous at tho home tvjrn, but faded away. Tho Maiden Hurdle Race was won by Kerehone from start to finish. He got away well, jumDcd faultlessly, and finished strongly. Mcltehikoll looked a little uangerous at one stage, but could never get level with the winner. Yankee Jack was the only withdrawal from the Great Northern Hurdles. Lochella was made favourite Cynic and Mill o' Gowrio also being well backed. Mill o' tlowrle was the first ■ to show out from tho field, and led for about two miles, when Lochella, who had been going very comfortably, drew up alongside her. Lochella was first over tho last hurdle, and, oomlng on,- won very decisively from Mill o' Gowrie, who ran a very fine race, and finished strongly. Slowcoach was third and Pemfton fourth. Cynic ran disapnolntingly. oud was never dangerous. Lord Nagar fell at an early stago of the race.

Tho Cornwall Handicap resulted 111 a hard-fought finish between Glen Canny and Trespass. Tho former led from the start. Trespass put in liis challenge, coming into the straight, but it, was stalled ofl by Glen Canny who secured, tho verdict by about half a length. Parisian Diamond was third some distance away, and B'.te Cross was fourth.

A great field of 21 horses faced the Btarter in thc.Mcmbers' Handicap. Golden Hubble and Queen Abbey, were made favourites, but several -others wero well supported. Ring Lupin led for the greater part of the journey, but the field closed on him in the straight, and a great battle to the post resulted in a win for Comedy Prince by a. small margin from Tam-a-roa, with Hyllus closo up third and Arran fourth.
